Choice has become the defining promise of the modern role-playing game. Yet for all the branching dialogue trees and faction systems, many of the most celebrated RPGs quietly guide players toward the same destination. This essay examines how developers create the feeling of agency while preserving a controlled narrative, and asks whether true player freedom is even desirable when it risks a less satisfying story.
